In this meaning, this series covers almost all aspects of the Naxi ethnic group, including the people, their life, the place they live, and it leads to you to a journey to the life of the Naxi people, the mountains and rivers they live by, and their unique culture and folkways.

A great visual experience

Unlike those ordinary documentaries published or broadcasted that feature of merely shallow observation or novelties, NAXI REFLECTION is produced in the style of documentaries from the Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel. It is a comprehensive record of the past and the present state of the Naxi people and a presentation of the blueprint for the development of the Naxi community, particularly on social development and the growth of the local tourism industry. Many experts in documentary commended that this series is the most comprehensive and in-depth record of the Naxi community. (See Attchment_A)

About the Naxi Reflection

In the winter of 1999, when I was doing field studies at Shuming, a mountainous village in Lijiang’s Tacheng Township, I came across a group of television reporters from Taiwan’s CMP Communications in the house of a Dongba priest by the name of He Guihua. Fascinated by the folk ways of life of this Naxi village, they were then occupying themselves with coverage o f a communal heaven-worshipping ceremony and other Dongba activities organized by He Shun, another old Dongba priest of the village. These activities were rarely seen in other parts of Lijiang. The devotion of the team to their work impressed me immensely, but I did not take too much of this to heart as there were then too many television reporters and film-makers swarming into Lijiang.

What I had not expected was the perseverance of this team from Taiwan. They were so attracted by the mysterious "Naxi Kingdom" that they made permanent stay at Lijiang. Each day saw them climbing hills and visiting villages in quest of the old Naxi ways of life and cultural tradtions. To understand the Naxi culture profoundly, they made themselves pupils to local scholars, and made me and several of my colleagues their advisors. Up to now, they have stayed in Lijiang for five years, and have literally measured every inch of the Naxi land, recording the magnificence of this land and the varicolored life stories of the Naxi with their camera lenses. Several years ago, a British television team stayed in Lijiang for two years and came out with a documentary entitled "In the South of the Clouds", which later created quite a sensation world-wide. I admired them for their dedication and originality__some of them even learned to speak the Naxi language in order to better understand the Naxi culture, which formed a stark contrast with some reporters who came to Lijiang in such a way as a dragonfly dips its tail in water. Following their suit, the team from CMP Communications spent five years making the Naxi Reflections. In the process they made Lijiang their second home. For many times I saw Eric Wang, the producer of the documentary, returned with his team from hills, their faces darkened and tanned by the stinging sun, yet all shining with excitement which they could not conceal. Their absorption in work and their love of the Naxi and Lijiang touched me in the deep.

NAXI REFLECTIONS is a documentary in 22 episodes. It is an attempt to explore and expose the various facets of the life, society, culture and national character of the Naxi. Many of the materials it presents are first-hand records that have been brought to the public eye for the first time. The documentary not only displays the scenic beauty of the Naxi land, but also provides a genuin account of the day-to-day life of the Naxi as well as an exploration of their mysterious ancient culture. For instance, it files a trip to caves and cliffs along the Jinsha, in which rock paintings by the ancients of prehistoric times have been found. It has also recorded some Naxi people and activities that have since vanished. In this sense, the documentary is valuable both as a historical record of the past and a precious ethnographic film about the present of the Naxi people.

Five years’ hard work has at last given birth to this documentary, which is so much imbued with the sweat and pains of its makers. I hope it will convey to more and more audiences from far and wide information about the beautiful and mysterious land of the Naxi.
