In the era of Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty, there was a business man called Zhang Yangshan who was running a famous traditional south paper production store in Songzhuzhai in the capital of the country. Because of the good quality and fame in the paper production area and also the stable business with the government, Song zhuzhai developed well and the relationship between Zhang’s family and their employees was harmonious.

In the year of 1860, the united troops of Britain and France declared war against the army of Qing in Zhangjiawan. Zheng yuanpei, the military officer of Zhili province went to combat. After a fierce battle, Zheng Yuanpei was hurt badly and found by Zhang Yangshan. In this vital moment, Zhang melted a piece of Chinese solid ink which was valued beyond a piece of gold as the hemostat to save the life of Zheng.

After the recovery, Zheng Yuanpei presented Zhang Yangshan two precious paintings from virtuosos and came back to the battlefront. Thus, those two paintings which were wanted thirstily by the royalties were kept by Zhang’s family and became the witness of the friendship of the two families.

In the twentieth year in the reign of Emperor Guangxu, Zhang Yangshan was aged and he passed the Songzhuzhzhai to his second son Zhang Shanlin. Unfortunately, Zhang linshan indulged in disport and wasted all the fortune on it and even diffused his bad habit to the only son of his elder brother. Knowing that the time was limited, the patriarch Zhang Yangshan handed over the family property to his elder daughter in law Li and also left the two paintings to her. Zhang Yangshan urged her to return the paintings to the descendant of Zheng Yuanpei but he didn’t know that the bloody war had already ruined Zheng’s family and the only survivor was a granddaughter of Zheng. But no one knew where she was during over 30 years.

Maoyuanzhai was the business rival of Songlinzhai. The senior employee of Maoyuanzhai was Zhuang Huchen, an astute man who was the backbone of the store. Through bribing the prince Yi Xin, Zhuang had Maoyuanzhai replaced Songlinzhai becoming the test paper provider of the national elites selecting examination. Playing other conspiracies, Zhuang and the shopkeeper of Maoyuanzhai obstructed the business of Songlinzhai and threaten the existence of Songlinzhai. Irritated by the evil deed of Maoyuanzhai, Zhang Shanlin wanted to recapture the business by presenting the paintings as gifts to the dignitaries. Facing the firm disapprobation of his sister in law Li, Zhang Shanlin gave it up but raised his require of dividing the family property with fury deep in heart....
