The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is an eternally immutable topic in China.
Lijuan, from Shanghai, gets married to Yaping who comes from the Northeast of China. Yaping stays in shanghai after graduating from college. With the help of mother and father of his wife, he gets a house and settles down. Soon he became a husband with a textbook shanghai style, shows great concern for his wife. The newly-married affectionate couple is on very intimate terms with each other. However, their happy life is totally changed after his mother's arrival. As Yaping's mother, she takes it for granted that her son should follow her advice and that he mustn't be at his wife's beck and call. Lijuan sees her husband as the closest person in her life, hoping to get the care package. It is unavoidable that the conflicts between them break out.
With strong Chinese traditional concepts, the mother-in-law tries every means to assimilate her daughter-in-law in life style, which conflicts with Lijuan's modern way of life. As a consequence, the contradictions grow with each passing day and the frictions upgrade continuously. Yaping's father fall ill and is in hospital, they make complete break with each other. Even though Lijuan gives a birth to a boy, they remain in a cold war. The boy's words "bad mother" set the family in danger of collapse. Lijuan is so annoyed as to force her husband and mother-in-law to leave the house. Losing his nerve, Yaping is egged on by his mother to strike his fist recklessly on his wife......
