The drama depicts a romantic love story in the setting of 1980s. Teresa Teng' s song "Sweet, Sweet Love" runs through the whole love story, annotating the perfect love in the age of innocence.

The story happened on a farm at the end of 1970s. Lei Lei (acted by Deng Chao), a beau and son of a senior cadre, encountered a beautiful intellectual Ye Qing' er (staring: Sun Li), a girl deemed cyprian by others. They two had an opportunity to know each other and started their innocent friendship and fell into love. Both of them love the song "Sweet, Sweet Love" touched off their unripe love.

Qing' er was recruited by a medical college, but Lei Lei didn' t pass the examination and had to hunt a job. A gap formed between them due to their different future prospects, and the relation between them had some subtle changes; although Lei Lei was born in the family of a senior cadre, he has some rebellious disposition acquired in his childhood on the farm where his parents were sent down. When he realizes he has fallen into love with Qing' er, he takes upon himself to court her. Because his father was ever denounced as righty, and Qing' er is a conservative girl repressed by the shade in her heart. She loves Lei Lei, but she doesn' t brave to accept Lei Lei' s bold and direct love because of her oppressive minds, her conservative family and the social environment. So, she has to resist Lei Lei' s pursuance.

Qing' er has been always thinking of Lei Lei though she keeps denying his love. The delicate relation is finally detected by her parents, and an "earthquake" happens immediately. In the eyes of her parents, Lei Lei is a rascal. They forbid Qing' er to meet him and dishonor him in public. Lei Lei, in humiliation and rage, holds Qing' er under duress, and this arouses a great disturbance in their families and the college where Qing' er studies. Lei Lei and Qing' er find true love during this period. Not having expressed their love, they are forced to part from each other due to the huge pressure from their families and the society.

After separation, they have been missing each other. The song "Sweet, Sweet Love" becomes the carrier of their love…

Han Yang, an old friend of Qing' er, appears in her life. Han Yang is a top student with both ability and moral integrity in the medical college, the best recognized talent at that time. Han Yang has been devoted to Qing' er silently. He has ever given many important helps to Qing' er and Qing' er is very grateful to him. Her parents like Han Yang very much and believe Han Yang is the best choice for her daughter' s future husband. Therefore, they try to pair Qing' er and Han Yang. But Qing' er is still missing Lei Lei. Lei Lei breaks through various obstacles and appears in front of Qing' er again. They finally express true love to each other. In the following dozen of years, Qing' er and Lei Lei have few chances to meet each other. They have been struggling between love and responsibility, making painful choice between sense and sensibility. Oppressive emotional tests come one after another, separations again and again…
